What is a Mosque and why?

The Arabic word masjid is derived from the root word سجد. The word mosque as simul makan or placeholder means ‘place of degradation’. Explaining the reason for this naming, Allama Yarkashi (Rah.) Has mentioned that since the prayer is performed in the mosque. And the best act of prayer is prostration, which is the greatest means of gaining nearness to Allah. That is why the mosque is called a mosque. [Yarkashi, E’lamus Sajid Biahkamil Masajid: p. 28]


In the technical sense, a mosque is a place that is a permanent place of prayer for the people. 398] And in general, for the Ummah Muhammad, all the holy places in the world are mosques. According to Allama Qazi Yaz, this is the special status of this Ummah. Allama Yarkashi said, ‘Our previous ummahs could not pray except in certain places. But it is lawful for us to pray in all the holy places. ' 27]


Narrated from Jabir Ibn Abdillah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said,


أعطيت خمسا لم يعطهن أحد من الأنبياء قبلي: نصرت بالرعب مسيرة شهر, وجعلت لي الأرض مسجدا وطهورا, وأيما رجل من أمتي أدركته الصلاة فليصل, وأحلت لي الغنائم, وكان النبي يبعث إلى قومه خاصة, وبعثت إلى الناس كافة, وأعطيت الشفاعة



‘I have been given five things which have not been given to any of my previous prophets. 1. I have been helped (against the disbelievers) by the effect, which is felt even after a gap of one month. 2. For me the whole surface has been made sacred and a mosque. So whoever has the time for prayer in my ummah, he will perform the prayer. 3. The spoils of war have been made lawful for me. 4. Every prophet was sent specifically to his tribe. And I have been sent to all mankind. 5. I have been allowed to make recommendations. '[Bukhari, Assahih: 353; Muslim, Assahih: 521]

It has been narrated in a long hadith from Abu Dharr that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said,

وَأَيْنَمَا َْدْرَكَتْكَ الصَّلاَةُ فَصَلِّ فَهُوَ مَسْجِدٌ

‘Pray wherever there is time for prayer. That is the mosque. '[Bukhari, Assahih: 425; Muslim, Assahih: 520]


Imam Nawabi (R.H.) said, ‘This hadith carries evidence that prayer is valid in all places except the places forbidden by the Shariah (graveyards, unclean places, toilets-baths, etc.).’ [Nawabi, Sharhu Sahih Muslim: 5/5]


Although the whole land is a mosque, mosques have been built wherever Muslims live in the world. Worship of Allah, the interconnectedness of the society and various wisdom has built mosques at the ends of the earth. According to one estimate, there are more than 2.5 million mosques worldwide. There are more than 2.5 lakh mosques in Bangladesh. And there are 6 thousand mosques in Dhaka city alone. Comparing the number with the size, Bangladesh has the highest density of mosques.

The mosque is the house of God. The best place in the world is the mosque. Muslims perform five daily prayers here, one of the foundations of the religion. That is why the role of the mosque in performing other religious functions is also relevant. The relationship of Muslims with mosques is not like that of their worship with other religions; On the contrary, the daily life of Muslims is closely associated with mosques. The mosque is the cultural centre of Islam. The mosque is the main focus of the individual, society and the state. From the personal life of Muslims to social, economic, political and even international activities are conducted around the mosque. It is the meeting place of Muslims, where they meet five times a day to establish a relationship with the Lord, as well as to keep in touch with each other and build bonds of brotherhood. In addition, a large number of people gather at the Jumu'ah Mosque on weekends. As a result, their mutual cooperation and love spread in the society and a cohesive and cohesive society was formed.

What is Jami Mosque?

The mosques that have the facility of offering five daily prayers including Jumma prayers are called Jami Masjid. Due to the low attendance of worshipers and lack of opportunities for prayers, some mosques do not offer Friday prayers but only five times. Those mosques are called Panjegana Mosque.

If you look at the European political map of the eighth century AD, you will notice that in Europe at that time, especially in countries like Britain, Germany, Austria, Russia, Eastern Europe, and Scandinavia, where there was no touch of advanced residential and civic life, Muslims from both sides of Europe prospered. Was moving forward. To the southeast, they were advancing slowly towards the Anatolian Peninsula, then towards the Balkans. And from the southwest to the southern border of France. Due to this progress and development of the Muslims, many time-honoured scholars were created. Just as historians and writers like Abul Qasim Zahrawi, Ibn Tofail, Ibn Rushd Qurtubi, Ibn Abdul Bar Andalusi have been created, so have many epoch-making writers. These powerful writers were able to transfer the rich culture of Islam to the West with the help of their creative writing.


At the time of the conquest of Islam, Spain was in a very weak position. Slavery was widely practised here. The aristocracy of ancient Rome, the aristocracy, allied themselves with the Vigyuts in order to protect their wealth and maintain their dominance, and thus they continued their oppression of the people. Vijigut means followers of Aryanists or misguided Christians. They used to persecute the people extensively. Samah extended the Muslim-occupied territory to the south of France. During the time of Abdur Rahman Ghafeki, extensive reforms were carried out in the situation in Spain. After Abdur Rahman, differences arose among the different tribes of the Arabs and the rift of those differences spread to Spain. Christians took advantage of this disagreement between Muslims and they occupied several cities in northern Spain.

In this situation in Spain, the Umayyad Caliphate ended in Damascus in 650 AD. Eventually, the army of the then ruler of Spain, Yusuf bin Abdur Rahman Fahri, was defeated by one of the Umayyads, and thus the Umayyad rule in Spain was established. The next episode in Spanish history thus came to be known as "Umayyad Spain". There were sixteen Umayyad rulers. They ruled Spain for about three hundred years. The first Umayyad ruler of Spain was Abdur Rahman bin Muawiyah bin Hisham and the last ruler was Mutamed Billah. The borders of northern Spain have changed many times during the reign of the Umayyads. There has been a lot of oppression of the people during this long period. People also protested against their oppression. The revolts of the jurists, the events of the trenches, and the revolts of the rabbis can be mentioned in this case.

However, these revolts of the people were not easily abandoned but were tried to be strongly resisted and the then-ruling party did not hesitate to carry out mass repression. However, this epoch did not go unnoticed. There have been widespread conflicts between the ruling groups. Gradually their inner conflict also affects society. When there is conflict in society, civil war naturally occurs in this resource-rich region. And the Umayyad rule came to an end due to that civil war. Umayyad ruled Spain for three centuries with a great shanshokat and finally left the seat of power.x

The third episode was famous in the history of Spain as the reign of Maluk Tawafi. This period extends from 422 AH to 696 AH. During this period, the practice of materialist consciousness continued with the spread of aristocracy. As a result, the foundations of morality are weakened and degraded. Christians were also attacked many times. By attacking, the Christians also captured many cities in this Muslim territory. By the first half of the seventh century AH, the Christians had conquered almost all the cities of the Muslims, i.e. Spain. With the exception of a small town in the vast territory of Spain, which was ruled by a large and prestigious Muslim state, they lost everything. So during the rule of Muslims, many branches of religious knowledge spread. Hadith, Fiqh, Medicine, Philosophy, Kalam, Architecture, Pottery, Calligraphy, etc. were widely practiced. Muslim-ruled Spain is said to be an open gateway to cultural exchange between Islamic lands and Europe in the Middle Ages. Many traces of the Islamic tradition still remain there. There will be witnesses of time for ages.
