World Elephant Day and Its Importance

World Elephant Day and Its Importance
Fig- an Elephant, photo credit Memories and Such.

What is World Elephant Day?

Every year on March 13th, we observe Elephant Day to raise awareness about the threats facing elephants and their conservation. This important day was established in 2012 by the Wildlife Conservation Network to recognize and celebrate these magnificent creatures.

Elephants are highly intelligent animals that have complex social structures and emotions. They live in family groups, with older females often taking on the role of matriarch, leading her herd across the savanna in search of food and water. Sadly, their numbers are declining rapidly due to poaching for ivory, habitat destruction, and other human-caused threats.

The Mother

when a dog is mother
Fig: Mother Dog Feeding Her Child

When I was young, my mother used to always say that the dog is a part of the family. She would say this with a smile, but I knew it was not just because she loved dogs but because she loved me.

My mother had been so kind to me all my life. Even when I was an egg, she would buy me toys for Easter and Christmas. She would take me out for walks in the park and let me go swimming in our pool. She would buy me clothes, even though she did not have much money.

Madhab Kundo Waterfall

Madhab Kundo Waterfall

Madhakund waterfall in Bangladesh located in Baralekha Moulvibazar

Madhakund Falls is the only waterfall in Bangladesh located in Baralekha upazila of Moulvibazar district. Many people from different parts of Bangladesh gather here every day to see it. From the top of the hill, about 200 feet high, the water is falling down at the end of a steady stream of sound. As a result of continuous fall, the bottom of the tank has been created. And the flowing current of the tank is flowing like a baridhara of peace.

It is said of the naming of Madhabkunda that when King Gangadhwaj alias Govardhana of Srihatta started building a rest house on the Patharia hill, he saw a monk meditating under the ground. Then, when he resigned and praised the monk, the monk ordered him to immerse him in this well on the thirteenth thirteenth, with different advice. Only three times after the monk was abandoned was the prophecy called Madhav, Madhav Madhav.

This is probably the origin of the name Madhabkund. According to some, the name of Mahadev or Shiva is known as Madhav and its place of origin is named Madhav Kund. Shiva temple has been placed next to this tank. The hill on which the water is flowing is completely stone. Large parts of it are scattered throughout.

The upper part of the rhyme is called Gangamara rhyme and the lower part is called Madhabchhara. The stream of water rushing over the rocks from the top of the hill split in two and suddenly fell down from the steep hill. It creates two clauses. A big one, a small one. During the rainy season, the two mixes.

Mountains around where the water is falling, ponds below. Water is constantly falling in the middle of the tank. This place is much deeper. A stone cavity or cave was created on the right side of the well. In 1342, Vishnudas Sannyasi established an orange orchard in the western part of Madhabkund, which still exists today. About 200 yards to the left of the main waterfall is another waterfall called Parikund. Water is constantly falling from there. But it is very difficult to go there. Many people will also be mobilized to see the convenience of travel.

How to get there:

Buses depart from Fakirapool, Saidabad, Gabtali and Mohakhali bus stations in Dhaka for Sylhet. Green Line Transport, Ena Transport, Saudia S Alam Transport, Shyamoli Transport, Ena Transport, Hanif Enterprise, Unique Service's AC and Non-AC buses operate on this route. The rent will be 400 to 1100 rupees.

Apart from the Kamalapur Railway Station, you can board the train from Parabat Express, Jayantika Express and Suburban Express to Sylhet. It will take 7-8 hours.

In the direct bus, you will get off at a place called Kanthaltali just before Baralekha. Madhabkund is not far from here. Rent CNG or rickshaw from here. The CNG fare will cost 15-20 taka per person, and if you pay the whole fare, it will cost around 1 taka.

And when the train actually comes, it will stop at Kulaurai. The distance from Kulaura to Madhabkund is about 35 kilometers. You can reserve CNG from here and go directly to Madhabkund. The rent will be 250 to 300 taka.

Where to stay:

There are two district council bungalows and two residential hotels.

Apart from this you can stay in Sylhet or Moulvibazar city hotel. There are various quality hotels and resorts in Sylhet city. You can stay in any of your needs and abilities. Lovely Evening

Flying mind in the late afternoon

Natural beauty of Bangladesh, if you want to enjoy such a heart shaking evening, you have to outside mega city and visit surround smaller city like Sylhet. There area many eye caching natural beauty spots.

I'm a lover of nature. It feels good to have an open environment. Out of all the noise I find the inevitable joy in solitude. The open blue sky, the soil and the water, I can never feel open when I do not go near. So in the holiday afternoon, I spent the afternoon at the river.

The first day of new year. I took pictures with my camera this afternoon. My thoughts are in the sadness of the fans, my thoughts float in the conversation and the laptop screen.

Thinking about the turbulent environment of the coming year, I think we will adjust to the new year with new convictions and expectations. Build confidence in the strength of change in the minds of all of us and in the unity of the people.

We no longer want the surprise of the event, do not want theatricality, do not want the death of conscience. I want peace and comfort. Don't want anarchy. I want religion, I don't want fanaticism. I want ease and fluidity in life, I do not want unnecessary wealth. We want to get rid of the culture, to develop our millennial life culture and heritage.

Transparent water of the river. The torrent of sunlight shines in the intense currents. Never tide, never break. The silver is mixed with the mind in this silver water.

And if the time is late in the afternoon then it doesn't matter. During the fall, the sun shining in the western sky spreads a purple aura in the river. Then the movement of the visitor returned. Such are the stories of the twilight of the Godavari river. And yes, the interest of young people in this generation to get a touch of such a scene is not over. That's why many plan to cross the river. Some with a friend, some with a girlfriend, enjoy the wonderful moment of Maya. It is really nice to go to the river to find a new beauty.

During the twilight, some took the position of capturing the red sun with their hands. One of them is Sultana Riya. He is a student of Lakshmipur Government College. Describing his own experience, Alexander came to Char Meghnapar in the southern part of the district, saying, “Our minds are always heavy on education. That is why I want to go to the river whenever there is a chance. In the afternoon sun, the exhausted water can be removed by watching the choked river water or the sun drowning in the river water.

The Butterfly

The Butterfly

Life cycle of Butterfly

From egg to grown-up, butterflies experience a progression of physical changes known as transformation. Subsequent to mating, the female butterfly lays her eggs on a caterpillar sustenance or "host" plant. The eggs can incubate inside a couple of days, or inside months or even years, contingent upon whether conditions are correct.

In the wake of bring forth, a caterpillar starts to eat the host plant. The caterpillar sheds its skin a few times amid this stage. It at that point looks for a shielded spot, suspends itself by smooth strings and sheds one final time to uncover skin that will solidify to shape the chrysalis or pupa. Days, months or even years after the fact, contingent upon the species, a completely created winged grown-up rises up out of the chrysalis and the cycle starts once more.

Barrier Mechanisms of Butterfly

Many butterflies have created intriguing methods for safeguarding themselves from predators. One technique is mask, or "obscure tinge", where the butterfly can resemble a leaf or mix into the bark of a tree to avoid predators. Another technique is compound guard, where the butterfly has developed to have harmful synthetic substances in its body.

These types of butterfly are regularly brilliantly shaded, and predators have learned after some time to connect their splendid shading with the awful taste of the synthetic substances.

Butterflies taste with their feet

Butterflies have taste receptors on their feet to help them find their host plants and locate food. A female butterfly lands on different plants, drumming the leaves with her feet until the plant releases its juices. Spines on the back of her legs have chemoreceptors that detect the right match of plant chemicals. When she identified the right plant, she lays her eggs. A butterfly will also step on its food, using organs that sense dissolved sugars to taste food sources like fermenting fruit.

Butterflies drink from mud puddles

A butterfly cannot live on sugar alone; it needs minerals, too. To supplement its diet of nectar, a butterfly will occasionally sip from mud puddles, which are rich in minerals and salts. This behavior, called puddling, occurs more often in male butterflies, which incorporate the minerals into their sperm. These nutrients are then transferred to the female during mating, and help improve the viability of her eggs.

The Beauty of Merrik

Merik Lake and the Arched Footbridge Beauty

Merik Lake is the central attraction of Merik and this is where you are likely to spend most of your time. This 1.25km natural lake is known as Sumendu Lake.
Rain and spring water keep feeding the lake and it remains full all through the year. The depth of water varies from 3ft to 25ft. The western bank of the lake is surrounded by forest with tall dhupi trees having walking trails passing through it and the eastern bank of the lake has a nice garden where tourists and locals relax and enjoy the natural settings.

The lake is at the lowest altitude in Merik (at 4,900ft). Far ahead towards north you can see the mountains, and on a clear day you can even get nice views of the Kanchenjunga snow peaks. There is a lovely 80-ft long arch footbridge bridge across the center of the lake which joins the eastern bank with the western bank.

Pathway exists all around the lake. If you take a full circle around the lake, it will be about 3.5kms... so a good distance for a nice morning walk although for most part the trail is not paved. In some places particularly in the forest at the western bank, the trail becomes quite uneven and therefore some care must be taken while walking.

Loads of travelers take part in fish encouraging simply outside the southern end of the lake. There is an extension that interfaces the lake zone with Krishnanagar (southern piece of Mirik). The scaffold is two minutes stroll from the lake. When you remain over the extension and look down beneath into the waters, you can see various fishes there. Vacationers and local people toss breads into the water and you can see many fishes quickly meeting. A woman there sells bread cuts for fish sustaining.

Flowers and Bees

Flowers and Bees

Relationship between Flowers and Bees

Flowers and bees - Bees and flowers have a mutualistic relationship as well. Bees get the nectar they need to make honey by traveling between flowers. The bee brings pollen from one plant to another, resulting in pollination. This is nothing but a case of pollination .

How do bees get pollen from flowers:

This is mutual interest. The plant needs to get the pollen on the flowers (in order to pollinate other flowers of the same species), the bee needs to take the pollen (in order to use it as a protein source). Obviously it’s not a matter of planning but co-evolution between the two species.

There are different ways in which the bee may “communicate” with the flower to trigger the flower to release pollen, these vary between species (of flowers and bees). On some cases, it is the frequency of the bees’ wings flapping that could trigger that release (thus only working for certain species of bees), on others, it’s a small electrostatic charge exchange as the bee approaches the flower. The exact mechanism varies, and frankly, I think not all of it is fully known to us yet.

The bee then directs the pollen to its pollen baskets - the area of its rear legs. If you watch a foraging hive for a while, you can look at the returning bees with full pollen baskets. The bees carry the pollen wherever they need it - the hive for social bees, the place where the eggs are laid for solitary bees.

For honeybees, the pollen is stored in cells in the hive, typically close to the brood chamber (so the nursing bees can consume nectar and pollen in order to feed the larvae and the queen without traveling too far from the brood chamber to get those).

How do bees choose which flowers to collect the pollen from

Bees would typically forage on the flowers they can find. Each bee tends to develop the “taste” for a specific species of flowers, that type of loyalty makes the pollination more efficient (and in turn, encourages the plant to attract and reward pollinators, thus encouraging the co-evolution). How bees find the flowers in the first place is a fascinating and complicated process, involving color, scent, pheromones left by previous bees on the flower (either as “come here to feed” or “I was already here and took what this flower has to offer, go elsewhere” type of message).

For honeybees, those returning to the hive use the famous bee-dance to inform the other bees where to go (as in “fly 30 degrees right of the Sun for 900 meters”). The bees that follow the dance catch the scent of the flowers from the dancing bees and look for that scent once they arrive at the described location.

The River Buriganga

River Burigangga
Fig- Water Boat on Buriganga River

In the distant past, the course of the Ganges River used to reach the Bay of Bengal through the Dhaleshwari River.

When this course gradually shifted and ultimately lost its link with the main channel of the Ganges it was renamed the Buriganga.

It is said that the water levels during high and very high tides in this river astonished the Mughals.

In the 20th century, the water table and river became polluted by polythenes and other hazardous substances from demolished buildings near the river banks.

The quality of the Buriganga water in Dhaka improved to some extent after the tanneries of Hazaribagh were shut down recently. Tests by the Department of Environment (DoE) say so and so do the people of the area.
