Bee hummingbirds are so small, in fact, that they have to compete with certain insects for food. In order to have their pick of the nectar, mosquitos, and spiders, male bee hummingbirds defend their favorite flora from hawk moths and bumblebees.

How do these tiny birds scare away the competition at such a small size? They intimidate with skill, showing off daring aerial displays of flying prowess.

The goldcrest may be the smallest bird in Europe, but the smallest bird in the world is the bee hummingbird. It is only 2 to 2.4 inches long (barely more substantial than a bee, hence its name) and weighs 0.056 to 0.071 ounces. That's less than the weight of a single penny. They make nests the size of quarters out of cobwebs and lichen where they incubate eggs the size of peas.

  1. The title of the world’s smallest bird goes to the bee hummingbird, which can be just 5 cm in length. It’s also the world’s lightest bird at under 2 grams, and has the smallest nest in the world – made from cobwebs and lichen – where it lays eggs the size of peas.
