The story of the first railway station in Bangladesh

The first railway station in Bangladesh has been running for about 160 years. On 15 November 1862, the first train ran in what is now Bangladesh and stopped at Jagati Railway Station in Kushtia. It is 3 km away from Kushtia city.

The British built this railway station in the world of Kushtia.


The two-story station building was built with red bricks. Now, of course, this heritage-adorned station building is a kind of abandonment. 

No one went upstairs for many years due to cracks in the building. 

The waiting room, which was set up for the convenience of passengers a long time ago, has also collapsed. 

Again the bricks of the platform are broken and the masonry is eroded. 

Two large overhead water tanks were built on either side of the platform to supply water to the steam engine, which had long since been abandoned. 

In these two tanks, water was pumped from the ground by pumps running on coal engines at that time.

On 16 April 1853, the first passenger steam locomotive, built by a company called Peninsular Railway, set sail for the Indian subcontinent. 

The journey from Boribunder in Mumbai to Thane covered a distance of 34 km with 400 passengers. 

The following year, in 1854, the first railway in Bengal was started with the introduction of the 38 km railway from Howrah to Hooghly in West Bengal. 

Then on 29 September 1862, the Eastern Bengal Railway launched a broad gauge (5 feet 6 inches) railway from Sealdah in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, to Ranaghat.




The railway line from Sealdah to Ranaghat was extended in the same year to 53.11 km in the present Kushtia district (formerly Nadia). 

Then on 15 November 1862, the train started running from Sealdah in Calcutta to Jagati in Kushtia. 

The train came directly from the Gede-West Darshan border of West Bengal to Jagati, 3 km away from the present Kushtia district town.




When I searched about a year ago, there were only five officers and employees at this station. 

Among them were a station master, three poets, and a gateman. According to them, 12-13 more posts have been vacant for a long time. 

Talking to a few elderly people in the area, it is known that they have seen 20-22 employees busy day and night in their childhood. 

Jagati Bazaar has been built along with the railway station, and there are a few shops there.




There are still occasional freight trains carrying coal and stones from India. 

Once there was a lot of land in the station but now there is not much land left. 

The first station on the territory of Bangladesh has passed one by one over 156 years. 

Although this station, which is gradually being canceled due to carelessness and neglect, is not profitable for the Ministry of Railways to provide railway services, historically Jagati station has been very important. So its maintenance is also important.

Chimbuk hill, known as the queen of mountain beauty in Bangladesh, is the third-largest hill in the country. 

The view of sunset and sunrise from this hill will fascinate any tourist. 

It is an exceptional tourist spot located 26 km from the district town and about 2600 feet above sea level.

There are several ways to reach Bandarban. Various buses ply for Bandarban such as Saudia, S Alam, Shyamoli, Unique, Dolphin, etc. The fare on these buses is around Tk. 750. You can reach Bandarban within 9 to 10 hours from Dhaka. 

If you want to come by train, you have to take a train ticket from Chittagong for 250 to 600 taka. In that case, you will get various trains from Sonar Bangla, Turna, Godhuli, and Prabhati to Dhaka to Bandarban from Kamalapur station.

When you reach Chittagong, you have to go to Baddarhat / Purbani bus terminal. In that case, the ticket cost from Chittagong to Bandarban is 200 to 300 taka per person.

If you want to come to Chimbuk hill from Bandarban, you can get various types of vehicles from Bandarban city station. Such as the moon car, jeep, and Pajero. You can reach any of these vehicles on the way to Chimbuk hill.

You can also go to Bandarban in a private or rented car. You can go here by jeep or moon car.

If you want to live in a monologue environment, you can stay in the rest house on the road and the village. 

Anyone who contacts the NDC can stay at the district administration's rest house. 

If staying overnight at a rest house is a moonlit night, it can be a memorable night for you. 

Seeing Jochna from a huge viewpoint is really a matter of luck.

Besides, there are numerous hotels, motels, resorts, and rest houses in Bandarban.

Travel tips for trips to Chimbuk hill

If you want to visit Chimbuk hill, you can take dry food and enough water from Bandarban city.

Don't hit the natural beauty of the mountain by throwing plastic, or garbage where it belongs.

Indigenous people can buy hand-made utensils as a memento of Chimbuk.

Do not do anything that is disrespectful to the tribals.

As Bandarban is a hilly area, it gets slippery during rains. So Chimbuk hill is suitable for winter travel.

Chimbuk's train from Bandarban is closed after 4 pm. So if you want to come back in one day, it is better to go in the morning and come back at the right time.

Caution to travel Chimbuk hill

When renting CNG, Mahindra, or any type of car from Bandarban city, contact the station directly and get the right bargain.

Being in a hilly area and out of town, it is difficult to get a network. You can take Robi and Teletalk SIM with you for emergency contact.

With a private car, you can actually confirm the route through Google Maps or by hiring a guide. If you lose your way, there is a possibility of a big accident on a hilly road.

Being a hilly road, extra caution is required while driving. It is better to avoid Chimbuk road during the rainy season.

If you have not booked in advance at the resort in Chimbuk, it is better to get in the car in Bandarban by 4 o'clock.

Since Chimbuk hills are located in inaccessible places, it is better to have adequate food arrangements.
