Visiting Egypt |
If you go to Egypt, you will see things that you cannot see anywhere else. But keep these tips in mind:
Do not kiss in public. Egypt is a bit conservative. We see kisses as a very sexual act. In fact, the only times I saw people kissing in my life, I was abroad. That means that if you're not on a private beach, don't overdo it with public displays of affection. By all means: hugs, holding hands, sitting on each other's lap, kissing on the cheeks, hands, fronts. But if you don't want penetrating looks and perhaps unpleasant comments, wait until you get home to go deeper into that.
Now sadly, if you are homosexual, you probably do not want to show affection in public, even in the above mentioned above. To be honest, I can't even predict certain reactions since I've never seen any homosexual couple acting lovingly in public before. All I can say is that it is seen very negatively.
In Egypt you will be treated as king / queen if you use tips wisely. DO NOT leave without extra cash. If you tip, everyone gives you an extra good treatment. Fortunately, the Egyptian pound is quite cheap, so even tipping you won't spend much.
This is not specifically Egyptian, but rather a tip for any international trip. Don't trust regular taxis unless you have to. There is a high probability that they will cheat you like a tourist. When in Egypt, use Uber or Careem. That way the prices are fixed for everyone. When I was in Malaysia, I used its equivalent which is "Grab". It made things easier too.
If you are in Egypt for history, my personal advice is that you DO NOT settle for the pyramids and the sphinx. And go to Luxor and Aswan if you can afford it. I promise you will thank me deeply. The amount of temples and ruins there are incredible!
Speaking of the pyramids, don't try to climb them, it's illegal.
Do not trust credit cards in Egypt. The option is not always available. So keep in mind that you will need to carry enough cash.
Do not rent a car and drive. Why? Because traffic in Egypt is crazy, especially in Cairo. Not only do I mean congestion, but traffic rules that are almost non-existent. What I would suggest doing is watching this crazy scene through the window of your Uber while you drink our amazing and cheap fresh juice. That way you can enjoy your vacation with more peace of mind.
Do not sleep with a local woman. Technically it is illegal. I'm sure people slip away. But you've been warned anyway.
Do not expect to see pork or alcohol in the markets. Your hotel probably provides you with both. But you won't find it much outside.
Don't expect to cross the streets normally. When you cross the street in Cairo especially, close your eyes and run! They will never stop to let you pass and you will stand forever. So recite your prayers and throw yourself.
Do not fall in love with an Egyptian. You will see many beautiful, funny Egyptian women. But if you're not going to fight for her to get married, go to the line to get parental approval, pay dowry and a lot of expenses, then don't expect a long-term relationship.
Voila! With that said, Egypt has what another country has no other to offer. If your plan is to travel wisely, you will get an unforgettable trip.
