In 1610, Dhaka was called the first capital of Bengal. At this time Dhaka was named Jahangirnagar after the Mughal emperor Jahangir. For a long time after 1717, Dhaka remained without a capital. As a result of the partition of Bengal in 1905 during the British rule, Dhaka was again made the capital of Bengal; But when the partition of Bengal was cancelled in 1911, the capital was shifted again from Dhaka. Then in 1947 Dhaka was made the capital of East Pakistan and in 1971 during the war of liberation, Dhaka was declared the capital of independent Bangladesh. The exact history of the naming of Dhaka is widely disputed. According to some, Dhaka has been named after the Dhakeswari temple.
