Bangla Bamboo

The woody evergreen plant bamboo is actually a member of the grass family.

They are the largest members of the grass family. Bamboo trees usually grow together in clusters.

One can see 10-70 / 80 bamboo trees together in a bunch. These bunches are called bamboo bushes.

Flowers in different types of bamboo bushes at different times; In some, it is fee-year, in some it is 3 years, in some it is 50 years, in some it is 100 years.

Melocanna baccifera, a type of radish bamboo, grows in the Mizoram state of India, Chin in Burma, and in the highlands of Bangladesh, to flower after 48 years.

Meanwhile, Japanese bamboo (Phyllostachys bambusoids) can bloom after 130 years.

The environment, the weather, nothing will be able to break the rules of flowering after these 46 years. Scientists are still investigating the exact cause of this.

How many species of bamboo are found in Bangladesh?

There are about 25 species of native bamboos including Muli, Talla, Barak, Bhudum, Baijja, Bethua, Farua, Ora, Lata Miringa in this bamboo garden. In addition, there are seven or eight more exotic species, including Brandaceae, Hedge, Thai, and China.

According to the Global Food Bamboo Resources Report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Bangladesh ranks eighth in the world in terms of bamboo species diversity. ... Brazil is in second place with 232 species. And there are 33 species of bamboo in Bangladesh.

At least 33 such species of bamboo can be found in the bamboo garden of Bangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI) at Sholashahar in Chittagong city. Of these, 25 species are native species. The other eight types are imported from China and some from Southeast Asian countries.

According to the Global Food Bamboo Resources Report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Bangladesh ranks eighth in the world in terms of bamboo species diversity. There are 500 species of bamboo in China. In second place is Brazil with 232 species. And there are 33 species of bamboo in Bangladesh. However, researcher MA Alam A Notes on Taxonomic Problems, Ecology and Distribution of Bamboo in Bangladesh mentioned in the research report that 26 varieties of bamboo have been found in Bangladesh.

The benefits of eating bamboo

Blood pressure control: Young bamboo lowers hypertension in the body. In addition, it reduces the risk of cancer.

Relief from constipation: Bamboo stalks are a very effective food to relieve constipation.

Those who suffer from this problem should include it in their daily diet.

The amazing mystery of bamboo flowers

Bamboo flowers are not common like other plants. There are amazing mysteries about bamboo flowers.

To this day, botanists have not been able to unravel the mystery of the bamboo flower. Let's relate the amazing mystery of Janayak bamboo flowers

 Mass flowering of bamboo

Bamboo of the same species of the same age blooms together in any environment in the world. This phenomenon is called mass flowering. Mass flowering can be seen on bamboo.

To illustrate: Suppose you plant many seeds or stems/saccharin/rhizomes of bamboo of the species Melocanna baccifera in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America.

Again, the new sprouts of this bamboo will flower after 50 years. Environment, weather, nothing will be able to break the rules of flowering after these 50 years.

  1. Bamboo flowering is considered a bad omen in several northeastern states of India, especially when accompanied by an increase in rodent population. It is believed to lead to famines and natural calamities. The next bamboo flowering is expected around year 2003-04. Should we prepare ourselves?

On October 29, 1958 the Mizoram district council cautioned the Indian government of impending famine in the state and demanded financial assistance for relief measures. This warning was preceded by bamboo flowering and increase in the rat population in the state.

The Indian government, however, rejected the financial demand on the ground that such anticipation of famines is unscientific. In 1959, the state was reeling under drought and famine.

This belief is older than the Indian epic Mahabharata , written 5000 years ago. In the story, the evil king Jayadrath forcibly abducted Draupadi, the Pandavas wife, and trampled through the forest in his chariot. She cursed the king that he would be destroyed, just as bamboos bring forth instant ruin by their blooming.

  2. Most bamboo species are believed by scientists to have a genetic “clock” in their cells that determines the time they will flower and the time they will die. This quality, unique among flowering plants, has long puzzled botanists.

  3. Bamboos are the fastest-growing plants on Earth. A typical bamboo grows as much as 10 centimeter in a single day. Certain species grow up to a meter during the same period, or about 1 millimeter every 2 minutes. You can actually see the plant grow in front of your eyes. Most species of bamboo reach maturity in just 5 to 8 years.
